But the effect isn't constant and only applies while the mouse is moving in any direction. In other words, if I move the mouse to the right by, say, 50 pixels, it will add constant movement to the right which can only be countered by returning the mouse to some imaginary center point. BUT the mouse ONLY moves while there is some sort of input. To explain further, if I move the mouse to the right, it will sort of cumulatively keep moving the mouse faster and faster, to counteract the movement I have to move the mouse to the left. With the widescreen fix, mouse movement doesn't lag the game at all, but the mouse input sort of acts like a joystick. Without the widescreen fix, moving the mouse makes the game stutter very dramatically to the point where the game practically stops for long periods. So I have been twiddling around getting Total Overdose to work on my laptop which is running Ubuntu 18.04, so the game is being loaded through Wine using Play On Linux, and I've encountered a very strange issue.
